Paris 2024 Olympic Games, day 1 live: After a glittering evening on the Seine, the Paris Games will kick off with sporting action on Saturday with a host of international and Indian athletes kicking off their campaigns.
The opening day of the tournament will see some of the biggest names in action, with Ariarne Titmus, Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh battling it out in the pool during the women’s 400m freestyle. 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will begin his bid for his first Olympic gold on Roland Garros’ iconic Court Philippe-Chatrier. Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek will also be in action in the singles before the young Spaniard takes on Roland Garros legend Rafael Nadal in the men’s doubles.

The opening day will also see gold medals in shooting, diving, road cycling, judo, skateboarding, rugby 7s and swimming. Fiji will be looking for a third consecutive rugby 7s gold when they take on Australia in the semi-finals before the final, which is due to be played this afternoon.

After arson attacks, bomb threats, the closure of the city centre and episodes of anxiety, columns of blue, white and red smoke and splashes of water (the “water curtains”) appeared over the Austerlitz bridge. And at that moment, shortly after 7.30pm local time, all of Paris breathed a collective sigh of relief.
What followed was a party never before seen on the Seine. Lady Gaga sang in French, little children received the Olympic flame from Zinedine Zidane on a broken metro (and then reappeared in the parade along the river) and cabaret joined in with a celebration of love, music and sport, all in a steady, heavy rain.
