He added, “We were filming secretly and some people came. There were 500 people surrounding us. The cameraman was an older man, around 50 years old. That guy called the unit saying that the camera would not arrive on time because we were stuck in a situation here. Hearing him talking on the phone, the person there thought he was calling someone influential. That man slapped the cameraman, snatched the camera from him and threatened to break it. We were about to get beaten up, but somehow we escaped.”
In many previous interviews, Anurag had revealed that Gangs of Wasseypur was shot at real locations with hidden cameras. And sometimes this technique put the film crew in danger. Vicky recounted the same: “We had a camera in a van and we were shooting at the Benares station. The scene was where Nawazuddin Siddiqui came out of the station, sat in a rickshaw and drove away. Even though we were shooting with a hidden camera, we demanded a single and appropriate shot. While we were shooting that scene, we saw two policemen looking at the camera and pointing it, asking, ‘Who are you?’ At that point, I told the guy to drive the van and run out of the station because the police had spotted us. That’s how Gangs of Wasseypur was made.”
The two-part epic black comedy crime film received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and was a commercial success at the box office. The films also gained a large cult following over the years.
