Recently, in an interview with Money Control, renowned Indian artist Jayasri Burman revealed that she was offered a project to hand-paint a lehenga for Ambani. choti bahuRadhika Merchant, via a Zoom call in June. It was stylist Rhea Kapoor who got in touch with her. She had just a month to deliver the gorgeous piece.

In fact, it was Radhika’s personal request that melted the artist’s heart, and she agreed to hand-paint a special piece for the young fashionista. Radhika told the artist that she loved her work and that at her home in Jamnagar there was a painting done by her and it looked good. She sweetly requested the artist and said, “Jayasri Aunty, I love your work. At my home in Jamnagar, your painting is there. It looks very good.”

Radhika Merchant did not want a yellow or green lehenga because her husband, Anant Ambani, does not like these colours.

Jayasri agreed but told them that it would be a piece of art. She added that she did not want to hand paint a design on a cloth for Radhika but to make a heart and that was her only condition. Recalling the moment, Jayasri said:

“I told them that this should be a piece of art. If I make something for Radhika, if she is going to wear it, it should be a piece of art. It should not be a design on a fabric.”

Radhika Merchant did not want to wear a green or yellow lehenga because her husband, Anant Ambani, and she Mother-in-law, Nita Ambani did not like the colour, so the artist opted for a pink colour as she knew that the Ambani family loves neutral colours. Recalling the bride’s words, Jayasri shared, “Anant does not like green, Nita Ji She doesn’t like yellow, so I chose a different color…a very happy color.”

Jayasri worked 16 hours a day for the entire month to hand-paint the lehenga.

Jayasri did not want to paint on fabric as it would become hard and brittle. That is when designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla sent her a good quality Indian canvas and gave her complete freedom. At their studio in South Delhi, Jayasri began painting for 16 hours a day for a whole month and the end result was Radhika’s beautiful lehenga.
