Kerala cybercrime police have nabbed the administrator of Tamil Rockers website for uploading new movies without permission. Identified as Jeb Stephen Raj from Madurai, the person was caught shooting for the film “Rayan” at a theatre in Thiruvananthapuram.
Often on the same day of their theatrical release, Tamil Rockers is notorious for distributing pirated films online. A recent victim of this piracy was the Malayalam film “Guruvayurappan Ambalanadai”, which was shown on the website just a day after its release. One of the film’s producers, Supriya Menon, reported the incident to the cybercrime police, who launched an investigation.
During investigation, the police found that Stephen Raj was in possession of several pirated copies of recently released films, including “Kalki” and “Maharaja.” On checking his phone, many premium pirated movie recordings surfaced. Stephen Raj had been recording unseen using a clever technique: he would place his cell phone in a cup holder attached to the cinema seat.
Stephen Raj, who operates undercover to provide Tamil Rockers with fresh pirated content, has been living in a guest house in Thiruvananthapuram for a year and a half. The website paid him Rs 5,000 for every new film. He would book tickets in advance for the premieres, maintain a covert relationship with the Tamil Rockers group and send the audio via WhatsApp.
Police observed that Stephen Raj’s phone, worth Rs 100,000, was loaded with pirated material. Thirty-three years old, he hails from Madurai and has been deeply involved in this illicit trade. The arrest represents a major turning point in the ongoing fight against digital piracy.
