How to Beat Jet Lag – Honest Travel Advice

hello fellow travelers hello fellow time changers hello fellow jetlag sufferers mark here with Walters rule today we’re in Kilkenny Ireland and we’re gonna answer one of the questions that a lot of our fans have asses for including my buddy Christine and they’ve asked mark what about jet lag what can I do to fight out jet lag or make sure I don’t have jet lag look when you travel you get time change when you get time changes that chances are you’re gonna get jet lag and that is that woozy tired I got hit in the face of the dodgeball and feel like this kind of feeling when you travel and you’re going to different time zones when your sleep patterns get messed up and so what this video is gonna do is cover some of the things that you as a traveler can do to help deal with jet lag when you are traveling fighting jet lag actually starts before you actually go and travel the first thing deals with the ticket that you’re gonna buy look if you’re gonna be flying you’re gonna have a big time change what you might want to look at is doing an overnight flight so you can sleep on the plane because then when you get there you’re well-rested you’re getting and you can go I know a lot of people can’t sleep very well on the plane like myself so that’s not always an answer but for a lot of people especially with our kids that’s actually worked really well because the kids will fall asleep on the plane and sleep the whole way there I mean I remember Liam he fell asleep in Chicago and he fell asleep before we took off we landed in Paris he’s like so when are we gonna get there like we’re already there dude he’s like oh cool you know so having that overnight flight can really help some other things you can do before you go is probably let’s say like the three to five nights before you travel start I’d say five nights to make it better depending on the time change is go to bed and go to sleep about 30 minutes eat earlier each day because just that hour and a half or two hour difference in your bedtime feelings can make a big difference because if you’re going from New York to here in Ireland well that’s a five hour time difference well of a sudden that 500 time difference with the two hours adjust in your sleeping only feels like three hours and you can deal with that so try adjusting your sleep before you go so those are some things to think about before you go but what about when you are there what are some things you need to think about well the thing is if you’re flying from the US you to Europe or to Asia use you haven’t oh this overnight flight and so you arrive in the morning or midday and thing is you’re gonna be really tired you like oh man I need a nap I gotta get some sleep now the thing is you got to be very careful with sleep when you get in what you really want to do is stay awake until at least 6:30 or 7 o’clock at night in the country you’re gonna go to because if you fall asleep at noon and you sleep until midnight what the hell are you gonna do from midnight to 7:00 a.m. not much to do so force yourself to stay awake push yourself that way and there’s things you can do to keep yourself awake you know go get a coffee or or have a coke or something like that if you’ve got little kids or adults dark chocolate actually helps people keep going I know when we come back from our travels and the kids got to go back to school we send them to school with a coke some dark chocolate and a note for the teacher explaining why and that helps them get through the day so you might want to have that dark chocolate and coke you know 2:00 in the afternoon to keep you going until 6:00 and it’s okay when you get there don’t go to sleep till 6:30 7:00 and it’s okay to go to sleep then have dinner at 4:00 or 5:00 and go to bed after that okay like it’s 6:00 or 7:00 because then you can get a full night’s rest if you wake up at 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning that’s still morning time and it’s okay and you can get some stuff done before you go out and explore now another thing is some people think well I can’t fall asleep you know I’m getting in it’s a it’s a day flight and I get in at 10:00 at night but I feel wide awake what do I do there’s some things that can help you sleep dried cherries actually can really help you sleep better another thing is melatonin you can take that to help you sleep but any kind of sleeping thing whether it’s medicine a melatonin or or any kind of herbs and stuff like that I really recommend you talk to your doctor look I am a doctor I’m a PhD but I’m not that medical kind of doctor okay talk to your doctor about sleep aids and stuff like that because they can give you stuff to help you out to get through those first couple days because it can make a really big difference another thing with sleeping is sometimes you have to take a nap you just can’t function and that can be one of the things I know with me I don’t sleep well on planes and so I don’t want to be up for 30 hours straight so sometimes you do need to take a nap when you do get there but here’s the warning if you take a nap set an alarm do not sleep more than an hour and a half and that nap when you get there because if you sleep more than that it’s going to mess up your sleeping routines okay so hour-and-a-half nap max because then you get recharge you can get up and go and stuff like that also and I’ll another thing that might help with jetlag you don’t have to worry about carrying your luggage around or forcing yourself to walk around with luggage or dropping it off and wondering what’s going on sometimes what you want to do if you’re going to get in early in the morning like sometimes you get in at 6:00 a.m. into Europe is maybe get booked your hotel from the night before so you can go straight to your hotel get your room you can put your stuff away take a shower which will really help you out and if you do need to take that nap you can take that hour-and-a-half nap but nothing more than an hour and a half okay the alarm is your friend and also with that sleep and it’s realized it’s not just going to sleep it’s also waking up you’re on vacation yes but you want to go explore places make sure you set that alarm to wake yourself up you don’t want to wake up at noon and be like oh it’s noon I won’t be on till 1:00 and the museum’s closed at 5:00 uh-oh so make sure you’re setting alarm to wake up in the morning as well okay another thing is when you’re on those flights anytime they come around and they bring the water by drink the water you need to stay hydrated to fight off jetlag and it’s not just on the planes it’s also when you get there drink lots of water and drinks and stuff like that stay away from alcohol the first day or so to get your body to adjust if you are having jetlag but man staying hydrated is one of the really big keys to fighting off jetlag and I will say one thing these jet LAG’s tip can help you but sometimes they don’t help people and a lot of times it depends on the situation you’re in because if you’re going to be going from the u.s. to Chicago to Beijing you know a 12 hour time difference you know adjust in a couple of hours here and there and using the coke to keep you awake or or the cherries to go to sleep those things can help a little bit but with such big time changes it can be just tough to adjust and so do prepare for that so when you are doing your flights you’re planning your trips make sure you get that first day you get there don’t plan too many things there just in case you are too worn out because of the jetlag so I hope this helped answer a few of our travelers fellow travelers questions if you want to learn more check us out on our website at Walters WorldCom or us on Twitter Facebook Instagram Saturday so hey what more can you ask for and thank you to all of our fans that’s that suggested we do something on jet lag to help people out because that is one thing that affects a lot of us I mean I’m still suffering a bit we got in yesterday and I didn’t sleep for 30 hours but I stayed up until 7:00 so that was good and actually Jocelyn called me at 9:30 and 10:30 to keep me awake so then I could have a normal night sleep instead of waking up at 3 a.m. okay so anyway have a great time stay hydrated and don’t let jetlag destroy your trip because hey it’s a wonderful world to visit even if you are tired so I’ll say bye from Kilkenny Ireland and have a great time traveling bye
