Diljit Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati tour, a major milestone in his music career, is now facing a controversy. Choreographer Rajat Batta accused Dosanjh of not paying for his services and expressed his disappointment in an Instagram post.
The Los Angeles-based choreographer wrote: “While we as a desi dance community are very proud of a desi artist breaking barriers and performing sold-out tours across North America… I am still deeply disappointed that desi dancers continue to be undervalued as an industry. None of the desi dancers on Diljit’s Dil-Luminati tour were paid and were only expected to perform for free…”
He also wrote, “Desi Dance as an industry has become a lifeblood for the artists and plays a major role in the entire ecosystem of the industry… while its choreography, stage performances, music videos, reels, even song promotion… is an essential part of the production and it is really disappointing to see an artist of this calibre cutting corners by trampling on the Desi Dancer industry and continuing to ascribe to that culture.”
Rajat said, “Diljit, we are very happy for your success, but your dancers should have been paid and been part of the production budget.”
