Starring Anjali in the lead role, the latest Telugu web series ‘Bahishkarana’, which also features Ravindra Vijay, Sritej, Ananya Nagalla and others in key roles, is directed by Mukesh Prajapati. The series is streaming on ZEE5 OTT. Check out our review to see how the series fares.

History:

The story is set in the village of Peddapalli in Guntur district. Shivayya (Ravindra Vijay) is the chief of Peddapalli and the ten villages around it. All the villagers fear Shivayya and follow whatever he orders. Shivayya destroys the lives of the women in the village with his money and power. Pushpa (Anjali), a prostitute, is Shivayya’s lover. A young man named Darshi (Sri Tej), who works for Shivayya, falls in love with Pushpa. Anjali accepts his love and the two plan to get married. But what made Darshi marry Lakshmi (Ananya Nagalla)? Why does he go to jail? What does he do after he comes out of jail? Does Pushpa take revenge on Shivayya? You will know the answers when you watch the series.

Positive points:

Bahishkarana is a crime drama set in a time when caste and religion issues were rife in villages and focuses on the character of the village head and the prostitute Pushpa. The suspense factor is handled quite well in some episodes. The clues showing Pushpa’s relationship with the characters of Shivayya and Darshi are impressive. The main conflict around these three main characters is quite good.

Anjali shines again with her bold portrayal of a prostitute. Her performance as Shivayya’s mistress and Darshi’s lover is the highlight of the series. Another female lead Ananya Nagalla gives an excellent performance despite limited screen time. Ravindra Vijay is in his element in the role of Shivayya. Sri Tej, who played the key role of Darshi, is also impressive. The rest of the supporting cast make their mark in their roles. The director handles some emotional scenes very well in this intense crime drama.

Bad points:

While writer-director Mahesh Prajapati succeeds in portraying the village ambience and the conflict between the characters of Shivayya and Pushpa, his performance in the script is lacking. Even though the emotion between the lead characters is well established in the last three episodes, the narrative seems melodramatic in certain sequences. The series lacks interesting elements in crucial scenes.

While the central theme of powerful village chiefs exploiting women belonging to lower castes was convincingly established, the narrative would have benefited from a much deeper treatment of the conflict. Apart from this, some emotional scenes follow a routine and familiar path. The sequence where Pushpa takes revenge on Shivayya with the help of Lakshmi could have been set up more interestingly.

Technical aspects:

Director Mahesh Prajapati impresses with his acting. However, he failed to create an engaging script for certain crucial scenes. Songs by composer Siddharth Sadasivuni are decent and his soundtrack enhances some important scenes. The cinematography and production of the series are good.

Verdict:

The suspense factor is handled quite well in certain sequences of this intense rural crime drama, which offers a raw and rustic feel to the audience. However, the lack of interesting elements in the script and the slow narration in certain parts are the major drawbacks of Bahishkarana. The grounded characters and the criminal background shown in this series may end up attracting only a small section of the audience.
