In an interview with FICCI’s Jaipur chapter, Dimple said that her father, Chunnibhai Kapadia, knew many influential people in the film industry and that a “famous director”, who was “like a family friend”, had said something terribly cruel to Dimple. “At that time I was suffering from leprosy. I was about 12 years old. I had it on my elbow. Then this man turned around and said, ‘I will see that you are excluded from school’. That was the first time I heard that word. I didn’t even know what it meant,” she recalled.

Dimple said it was her medical condition that led her to meet Raj Kapoor. “Raj Kapoor wanted to meet this girl. He was told that there was a beautiful girl who was suffering from leprosy. From this kind of setback, there was a lot to gain and that’s how I got Bobby,” she said, adding, “It was the most fabulous moment of my life. Whatever I said, wanted or wished for, it just happened. It was magical. Absolutely magical.”

She then recalled how she first heard about the auditions for Bobby and said that Raj Kapoor first rejected her for the role. “I remember reading a newspaper in school that said Raj Kapoor was looking for a girl for Bobby. I told my friends, ‘I am Bobby.’ Then I went for the audition and they rejected me because he said ‘you look much older than Chintu (Rishi Kapoor).'” These days were written in the main book. (In those days I used to write in a notebook.) I used to fill my notebooks with Ram Ram Ram Ram. I used to think How did this happen? “How did this happen?” she recalled.
