Baghban actor Samir Soni. He recently spoke out about the harsh realities of the acting profession. Giving an example of how the Rajesh Khanna The phenomenon took Bollywood by storm, he said that there was a time when women used to kiss Rajesh Khanna’s car but no one even bothered with the superstar of yesteryear after his much publicised downfall.
“It takes 100 days to make a film. Has anyone ever wondered what the real life of an actor is like? Nawazuddin Siddiqui was a vigilante and that is a reality, no lie. There was a time when girls would stop Rajesh Khanna’s car and kiss him. Then there was another time when he would sit on the set and no one would even say hello to him. This phase (fall) is much longer than that (success),” Samir shared with Ujjwal Trivedi.
He then shared an advice for those who want to become actors for the glamour that comes with the profession. He said that most people are blinded by the glitz of stardom, but no one sees what one actually goes through on the path of becoming an actor. He said, “You must know why you want to be an actor. If you want to be an actor because you like the glamour, then don’t even try. Those are wrong reasons to be an actor, because these are things you cannot depend on, the chances of them happening are very slim. But if you still want to take the risk, then don’t sit there crying and be ready to waste the next four to five years of your life; because what will happen is that when even the slightest difficulty appears, you will want to run away. The glamour that you see, you must know what is behind it.”
“Whatever your profession, you must know… You must know what a doctor does (if you want to be a doctor). At least you must know that to be a doctor, you will have to go to university, study medicine, do an internship, get a specialization. Then you will be able to treat a patient,” he added.
Soni also said that people who think they can become actors just because of their good looks need a dose of reality. “You think that an actor’s job is done if you have six-pack abs, if you look good. Do you even know that an actor, before he got a job, didn’t even have enough money to pay rent for six or eight months? That’s the reality. What you do in front of the camera you do because you enjoy it, it’s an art. You can spend ten months on an empty stomach…” he concluded.
The fall of Rajesh Khanna Several of his contemporaries have spoken of him, pointing out that he failed to come to terms with his waning popularity for years. His ex-wife, Dimple Kapadia, said in an interview with India Today in 1985: “When a successful man breaks down, his frustration envelops his entire surroundings. It was a pathetic sight when Rajesh waited at the end of the week for the collection figures, but people did not have the courage to come and tell him.”
