High expectations had been pinned on the second part of Kamal Haasan’s film, but unfortunately, it has failed miserably at the worldwide box office. It has turned out to be a huge disappointment and might struggle to reach the Rs 150 crore mark. Amid such a poor response, there is a strong possibility that the film may release prematurely on OTT, and the latest rumours also suggest a speculative release period. Read on to know more!
The Indian sequel marked the reunion of Kamal Haasan and director Shankar after the box office success of 1996’s Indian. Yes, the film had a good buzz around itself after an announcement was made, but unfortunately, it suffered from too many delays. In the end, the hype around the big film died down and furthermore, the lack of promotional material hampered its box office potential.
As per the recent update (8 days), Indian 2 has earned over Rs 70 crore nett at the Indian box office, which works out to a gross collection of around Rs 85 crore. Combining the overseas collection, the film has earned around Rs 134 crore gross globally. Considering the reported whopping budget of Rs 250 crore, it is heading towards a disaster tag. This has led to a change in strategy for the OTT release.
For those unaware, Netflix has bought the streaming rights of Indian 2 for a whopping sum and it was reportedly supposed to make its OTT debut after 6-8 weeks of its theatrical release. But as the film turned out to be a disaster, it might witness a premature release and as per the latest rumours, the big film might release in the second week of August.
After the disastrous response in theatres, the makers are hoping for a good response for Indian 2 on OTT. Let’s see if the strategy works and helps generate hype for Indian 3.
